Do you have problems? Do these problems seem to linger and never go
away? Does your life feel unbearable
from time to time? Are you upset that
life cannot be better than what it is?
One possible reason is that
you are too self consumed or too self focused.
I deal with this struggle on
a daily basis, as well as most of the people around me. It seems that most of our anxiety, anger,
resentment, disappointment, sadness and whatever emotional or mental hang-ups
we have, stem from a sense of thinking about what we deserve in this life or
what we currently lack here.
So, let’s think about
it. What are we entitled to here on
earth? Are we promised anything here or
is there a perfect formula for a perfect life?
Who in the world sold us the lie that we should at least have this much,
or this is the minimum standard for life to be acceptable?
We say it and hear it every
day. Why is this happening to me? My job sucks. My wife is out of control. My husband is an ass. I
don’t know what to do with these kids. This traffic is horrible. I hate
my life. I wish I could win the lottery. I think if I do this, this and
this, life is
going to get better. Blah, blah, blah,
blah, blah, blah!
When I catch myself behind
these words, I realize that I am way too self focused. I like quick fixes in life and struggle with
God’s timing in things. When I put in my
efforts to do something right, I want results.
I want them my way. When I don’t
get them, I get peeved. Then, usually,
instead of taking a deep breath and committing the situation to God and His
timing or reflecting on the situation to see if I could do a better job or
assessing a realistic time frame for my desired results, I take my annoyance
and turn it into disappointment. Then
this disappointment quickly leads to anger, bitterness, resentment, anxiety,
depression, constant complaining or any number of sins.
Everyone’s life could be
better. There is no one with the perfect
life here on earth. God wants us to use
our talents to do our job in living better lives. But let’s be realistic. Only a few things are really in our
control. In these few things, we must be
responsible in doing our best. However,
most things are completely out of our control.
These are things we just need to accept for the time being, and lift up
to God for deliverance.
We cannot force people to
treat us a certain way. It’s their
choice. We can’t force our spouse to
love us a certain way, it would not be real.
We can however, communicate to them our needs and possible solutions for
meeting our needs and hope that they will respond either out of love or
sacrifice. But being too caught up in
how others treat us or how our environment is lacking or how our situation
needs improving will inevitably lead to disappointment and frustration.
We need to let it go. What?
We need to let go of our expectations from others or from a situation
getting better. We have to stop saying
to ourselves, “Only if I had this or only if this was better or only if…” We must not let selfish desire dictate our
happiness. We cannot substitute
happiness the way God intended us to have it with the happiness prescribed by
the world or the happiness formula we invented in our mind.
So what is the solution? We must deny ourselves and take up the Cross. We must love others as we love ourselves and
since we cannot truly measure how much we indulge in self worship and self
love, we must try to love others more than we love ourselves.
God never promised us wealth,
health and happiness on this earth. God
never said that all your relationships would be perfect. God didn’t say He would spare you the daily
encounters with the idiots in your life.
He does, however, want us to reflect on our own idiotic ways and
repent. Perfection will come when we get
to heaven, but until then we have some unfinished work here on earth. In the midst of the weeds we are the wheat
growing for the harvest. We must be the
light and the salt of this world. We
must do what God has called us to do and stop worrying about making life perfect
here on earth.
We think we cannot handle much
and life is unbearable; it is only because we are so self-focused. God has given us enough to handle all that we
have and He will keep giving us what we need day by day, as long as we seek to
do His will first. He not only wants us
to handle and accept our problems, but in the midst of these imperfections He
wants us to do the right thing and live life in thankfulness.
There is much that God wants
us to do. We can either choose to live
for ourselves complaining, anxious and bitter or we can choose to live for
Christ. God’s way always works and His
timing is perfect. So day by day choose God’s
way and let’s do our best to sacrifice and serve Christ and others and deny our
immediate desires. Our cup will be
filled in wonderful ways we cannot understand when we seek His Kingdom first.
